The movie “Papillon” 1973 starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman…..
Is about a petty thief wrongly convicted of murder (McQueen)……
And a wealthy con artist who thinks he can buy his way out of anything (Hoffman)……
They are sent to a brutal penal colony 20 miles offshore in French Guyana from where there is no escape…..
Bleak future…..
The only thing on their mind is escape……
They try…..
And fail…..
Two years solitary confinement…..
They get out…..
Try again…..
FAIL…..
FIVE YEARS solitary confinement…..
The picture does an excellent job of making you FEEL what they are going through…..
The isolation…..
The lack of interaction…..
WITH ANYTHING !
About every 6 months…..
They are required to stick their heads out of a little door on their cells…..
They get a brief exchange with each other…..
And the one thing they ask…..
” Hey- how do I look?”
They know their physical health is deteriorating…..
But, they can’t MEASURE it…..
They need someone to tell them they are OK……
Even if they aren’t…..
So they can hang on…..
And make it through…..
Now…..
Why do I bring this up ?
Because…..
I am building an online business from scratch…..

  • And one on one dealership mentoring…..
None of these things existed before…..
I have to create them…..
Believe me…..
That can be very isolating…..
Maybe not as bad as solitary confinement…..
BUT…..
Isolating, none the less…..
And the one thing you find yourself asking is:
“Hey- how do I look?”
Which leads to…..
How do I sound…..
Is my message right…..
Does my product work…..
Am I demonstrating it right…..
Is my content relevant …..
Am I going to be able to teach YOU everything you need to learn to create YOUR OWN profitable wholesale business…..
Are YOU…..
Going to be able to wake up everyday and know what every car is worth?
Judging from the feed back I now get on a daily basis……
When I do pop my head out of my “cell”…..
The answer is YES !
“Keep going” I’m told…..
GET BETTER EVERY DAY!

With sales now over 100 million…..
And offices in the U.S., Canada, and the UK.
CarGurus is now number one in mobile traffic and number two in desktop traffic compared to competitors.
“The statistics we see on a weekly basis are staggering” Steinert said.
But…..
Even after all THAT is said…..
Awareness of the company among the general public isn’t quite where they would like it to be…..
“We’d like to be as synonymous for car buying as “buying a book on Amazon” or ‘buying music on iTunes”…..
So…..
They are focusing their aim to reach a new audience…..
People who are in the early stages of car shopping…..
Or…..
put another way…..
People at “The Top Of The Sales Funnel” …..
Tire kickers…..
Those who are “just looking”…..
Are offered content they can interact with…..
From this interaction, marketers send different types of content that provides MORE DETAILED information…..
If they interact with THAT content…..
It is assumed they are getting serious about making a decision…..
When people exhibit buying signals…..
They are passed off to the sales staff…..
Then…..
BOOM!
A SALE !!
So…..
CarGurus launched its first mass-media awareness ad campaign in April…..
“We want to get people to think first and foremost about us as their shopping destination when buying a car comes to mind” said Steinert.
Does anybody remember HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey ?

Why do I call Instagram the wild wild west ?
No…
Not because it now has over 700 million people using it…..
Because over 400 million of them are checking in daily…..
Yes…..
EVERYDAY!
Most…..
SEVERAL times a day…..
It’s a social platform that feels…..
Well…..
SOCIAL !
It is now substantially changing the daily experience of using the service at a speed that seems RECKLESS……
But it feels more useful…..
More interesting…..
MORE FUN!
Networks are better when more people use them MORE often…..
The more I use it…..
The more stuff I’ve seen from people…..
ALL OVER THE WORLD !
And that makes me want to use it MORE…..
Even though I’ve only been posting for a few months now…..
It feel like I’M the wild wild west homesteader…..
Watching more and more covered wagons showing up every day…..
Particularly…..
Covered wagons full of car dealers…..
Car software companies…..
Exotic car enthusiasts…..
Car photographers…..
Car detailers
Car auctions…..
Car mechanics…..
Car financiers…..
EVERYBODY !

And counting…..
All virtually one click away from one on one interactions…..
So…..

As I sit here looking at tomorrow”s auction run…..
At Manheim Albany, Clifton Park N.Y.
My home auction…..
I am trying to make a list of vehicles to pay attention to when they come through the lanes…..
Cars I can buy…..
And I gotta tell ya…..
It ain’t easy…..
Out of the 818 cars and trucks registered…..
I wrote down six…..
SIX !
The reason…..
There just isn’t much demand for anything…..
Every year…..
Through the summer weeks…..
Wholesaling cars is a struggle…..
Particularly in our area…..
With the Saratoga Thoroughbred racing season in full swing…..
Lake George…..
The Great Escape…..
Saratoga Performing Arts (SPAC) concerts…..
And many other distractions for vacationers…..
Retail car sales understandably slows down…..
Dealers spend much of the summer weeks paring down their existing inventory…..
And auction sales become weak…..
REALLY WEAK!
July is a month wholesalers JUST GET BY…..
Sell enough to pay the bills…..
Maybe make a couple of wagers on the ponies…..
Do a little swimming…..
And move on.
 
 
The month started out with a bang…..
We sold at least a car a day for the first 10 days….
Including two on the 4th of July…..
It seemed like the summer lag hadn’t hit…..
Then…..
CRICKETS…..
Only 4 sales in the last two weeks…..
We had some days with zero views……
ZERO VIEWS !
Nobody was looking…..
At anything…..
This is the point I usually try to offer some words of wisdom as to WHY that is….
But I have none…..
Since I started posting cars for sale online four years ago…..
I never had multiple days with ZERO views…..
I’m a little concerned…..
But…..
All I can do is pay attention and watch for signs that things are picking up…..
And if I get a tip on a good daily double…..
I’ll let you know !
